SUSTAINABILITY!?
For many people, the word “sustainable” is often synonymous with “green”, with ecological issues.
At the Jam, we take a different view.
We are interested in all types of sustainability – ecological, certainly, but also economic sustainability, social, political and cultural sustainability!

WHAT ON EARTH IS A JAM!?
A Jam is similar to a workshop, or jamming in music. You come together, bringing your instruments, your skills, your open mind. Someone sets up a theme, and you start to Jam around it. You don't overanalyse it, you don't discuss it to death, you Jam. You bounce your ideas off other people, and play around with what comes back. Together, you build something which none of you could have built alone.
Our basic field for this event is "sustainability", but we will give you a specific Theme on the Friday night which we hope will inspire and challenge you. (This is why it's important not to bring an idea to the Jam - instead, let ideas happen when you are there). As soon as you have the Theme, you can get busy...
Jamming is also about turning your ideas into a concrete design or prototypes! Perhaps it will be a service, a physical device, an initiative, a network, or something no-one has thought of yet!
“But hey, I don't know how to make prototypes!”
Don't worry! We will have professional service designers coming over, explaining the techniques and guide you through the process.

YOU MENTIONED SERVICE DESIGNERS THERE ... WHAT IS SERVICE DESIGN?
“If you would ask ten people what service design is, you would end up with eleven different answers - at lest ...”
“Service design is an interdisciplinary approach that combines different methods and tools from various disciplines.” This is Service Design Thinking “It helps to innovate (create new) or improve (existing) services to make them more useful, usable, desirable for users and efficient as well as effective for organisations. It is a new holistic, multidisciplinary, integrative field.” Stephan Moritz Reading these sentences, can you imagine applying service design tools to environmental problems and coming up with innovative services? Yes? Then read further! |
